In a deeply troubling case, Keith Steininger, a retired teacher and Boy Scout troop leader from Delaware County, Pennsylvania, has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse involving a minor. Steininger, 68, who served as a teacher at Girard College for over four decades, allegedly abused a student while also acting as the child's Boy Scout troop leader.
The allegations came to light on January 25, 2024, when the foster parent of a former Girard College student reported to Upland Borough Police that her foster child had been sexually assaulted by Steininger over a period of two years, from 2018 to 2020. The victim, who was between the ages of 11 and 13 at the time, disclosed that the abuse occurred while he was staying at Steininger's home.
During a forensic interview, the child provided text messages exchanged with Steininger and described the incidents in detail. On April 11, 2024, in a phone call monitored by investigators, Steininger admitted to the sexual contact and apologized to the victim.
Girard College: The president of Girard College, David Hardy, expressed shock and anger over the allegations and pledged full cooperation with law enforcement. The college has also offered counseling and support services to students and families affected by the news.
Boy Scouts of America: The Boy Scouts' Cradle of Liberty Council terminated Steininger's membership and stated they would cooperate fully with the investigation. They emphasized that Steininger had completed all required youth protection training and background checks.
Steininger faces several charges, including:
He is currently being held on $250,000 bail, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 2, 2024. Authorities believe there may be additional victims due to Steininger's long tenure working with vulnerable children.
