In a significant development for survivors of clergy sexual abuse, the Diocese of Camden has announced it will no longer oppose a New Jersey grand jury investigation into allegations of abuse by clergy members. This decision marks the end of a seven-year legal battle that had previously prevented state prosecutors from convening a grand jury to examine the findings of a clergy abuse task force.
The legal contention began in 2018, following a Pennsylvania grand jury report that uncovered widespread abuse within the Catholic Church. In response, New Jersey formed its own task force to investigate similar allegations. However, the Diocese of Camden challenged the state's authority to empanel a grand jury, arguing that such investigations were limited to public officials and entities. Lower courts sided with the diocese, and the proceedings remained sealed until the New Jersey Supreme Court ordered some documents unsealed earlier this year.
Bishop Joseph A. Williams, who assumed leadership of the diocese in March, communicated the decision to cease opposition in a letter to parishioners. He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability, stating that the church must support survivors and work towards healing. "The survivors are Church," Williams wrote, acknowledging the pain endured by victims and the need for the church to stand by them.
The diocese's reversal is seen as a positive step by survivor advocacy groups. Mark Crawford, New Jersey state director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), expressed cautious optimism, noting that the decision could lead to greater accountability and trust. "Hardball legal tactics only silence victims and create more mistrust, more pain, more cynicism," Crawford said. "This is a refreshing change."
