Stephen Matthews, a former cardiologist from Denver, Colorado, has been sentenced to 158 years in prison for drugging and sexually assaulting multiple women he met through dating apps. This shocking case of cardiologist sexual assault has sent ripples through the medical community and highlighted the dangers of online dating.
Matthews was convicted of luring women to his West Denver townhouse after meeting them on popular dating apps like Hinge and Tinder. He would then spike their drinks with an unknown substance, causing many of the victims to have only sporadic memories of the events that followed. Several women testified that they regained consciousness to find themselves naked in bed with Matthews, who had sexually assaulted them. The crimes took place between 2019 and 2023, with Matthews ultimately being convicted of drugging 10 women and assaulting eight of them. Prosecutors believe there may be dozens more victims who have not come forward.
In August, a jury found Matthews guilty of 35 out of 38 counts brought against him, including second-degree assault charges and assault-related charges, after deliberating for more than three days. On Friday, November 1, 2024, Judge Eric Johnson sentenced Matthews to 158 years behind bars, effectively a life sentence for the Denver cardiologist.
During the 4.5-hour sentencing hearing, 21 people, including victims, their family members, and supporters, gave impact statements. Many of the women described the long-term effects of Matthews' actions, including anxiety, depression, paranoia, and physical problems.
The announcement of the sentence was met with applause from Matthews' victims and their families. Judge Johnson addressed the victims directly, stating, "You were believed. The verdict said that."Denver District Attorney Beth McCann called Matthews' crimes "despicable" and expressed hope that the sentence would provide some comfort to the victims of sexual assault.
Matthews, the physician turned sexual predator, remained stoic throughout the hearing, showing emotion only when his mother testified. His defense attorney, Douglas Cohen, stated that an appeal is planned, which may include challenging some of the assault-related charges.
This case is a stark reminder of the potential dangers of online dating and the importance of trusting one's instincts. It also highlights the courage of the victims who came forward to ensure that Matthews would face justice for his heinous acts of sexual assault. The medical community will undoubtedly be grappling with the implications of this case for some time to come, as it raises questions about the screening and monitoring of healthcare professionals.
In light of this case, anti-sexual violence organizations have emphasized the importance of resources like the national sexual assault hotline for victims seeking support. These organizations also stress the need for increased awareness and prevention efforts to combat sexual assault, particularly in cases involving trusted professionals like cardiologists.
Victims of sexual assault are encouraged to reach out to the sexual assault hotline or local support services for assistance and counseling. The courage of those who came forward in this case may inspire others to seek help and justice.
