Pennsylvania Doctor’s Hidden Double Life: Sexual Abuse, Secret Cameras, and a Chilling Murder Plot

Respected Physician’s Crimes Exposed After Hidden Camera Discovery

A Pennsylvania family’s world was shattered when a hidden camera discovered in their home exposed years of horrific abuse. What began as a shocking invasion of privacy evolved into a case of sexual abuse, manipulation, and a murder-for-hire plot, leading to the conviction and imprisonment of Dr. Justin Rutherford, a once-respected physician.

In 2021, Stacey Rutherford, a mother of four, uncovered a secret camera hidden in her bathroom — planted by her second husband. For years, it silently recorded unsuspecting victims, including children. Investigators soon learned that the camera was just one element of a deeper pattern of predation that had taken place inside what appeared to be a loving family home.

“You always think, as a mom, if you know your kids so well, how did you not see something was broken?” Stacey said in an interview with Fox News Digital. “The feeling gets less and less over time, but it’s also a feeling that never goes away.”

The shocking story is now featured in ABC News Studios’ docuseries Betrayal: Under His Eye on Hulu — a disturbing portrait of how one man lived a double life while deceiving those closest to him.

Grooming, Exploitation, and Years of Abuse

Stacey met Justin in 2015 through a dating app. At the time, he was a charming medical student who seemed genuinely interested in her and her two children. By 2019, they were married and had two more children together. To friends and neighbors, they appeared to be the perfect family.

Behind closed doors, however, Rutherford was grooming and abusing his stepson, Tyler VanScyoc, starting when the boy was just 11 years old. For years, the abuse went unnoticed. It wasn’t until a teenage friend of Tyler’s discovered the hidden camera disguised as a phone charger in the bathroom that the truth began to surface.

Police later revealed that the doctor had secretly recorded thousands of explicit images and videos of individuals in his home — including minors — as they showered, changed clothes, and used the bathroom.

During the investigation, a friend of Tyler’s disclosed that Rutherford had sexually assaulted him during a sleepover after giving him alcohol. The revelations devastated the family. Tyler eventually came forward and bravely revealed that his stepfather had molested him for years.

“Initially, I didn’t think there was any courage there in my speaking out,” Tyler said. “I felt like I had to. But the more I shared, the more I was no longer letting it eat me alive.”

Manipulation and Betrayal

Rutherford’s abuse relied on emotional manipulation. Tyler described his stepfather as someone who built trust — only to weaponize it.

“He made me love him and trust him,” Tyler said. “When he wasn’t in ‘monster mode,’ he acted like a good dad. That’s what made it so confusing.”

Stacey said she never noticed warning signs. “As parents, we’re supposed to be able to protect our kids,” she said. “When you can’t, it feels like it’s your fault.”

Her words reflect the devastating emotional aftermath many families experience in the wake of abuse — guilt, self-blame, and trauma that linger even after justice is served.

From Doctor to Convicted Criminal

After his crimes were exposed, Rutherford fled to Europe, attempting to evade justice. But upon returning to Dulles International Airport in Virginia, he was arrested.

While awaiting trial, he attempted to orchestrate his stepson’s murder from prison through letters sent to a family acquaintance. The plot was discovered before it could be carried out.

In 2023, Rutherford was sentenced to 26 years and 10 months to 70 years in prison by the Berks County District Attorney’s Office for multiple counts of sexual abuse. He later received an additional five to ten years for his murder-for-hire plot.

“I don’t think I’ve slept the same since all of this happened,” Stacey said. “I’m always looking over my shoulder.”

Lessons for Parents and Communities

The Rutherford case serves as a stark warning about how predators often hide in plain sight — behind titles, reputations, and family roles. Stacey now uses her experience to advocate for awareness.

“Have conversations with your kids,” she urges. “It’s not only creepy strangers who molest kids. This stuff goes on inside good homes. It can happen anywhere.”

Experts agree that early education about body autonomy, open communication, and regular check-ins between parents and children can play a critical role in identifying and preventing abuse.
